Compete Complete in 2018

I didn’t make it a resolution, but I probably should have: I’d like to write more in 2018.

I know a lot of other people had it rough in 2017, but it turned out to be a good year for me. A lot of cool things happened for me, chief among them finally finishing a bachelor’s degree! I’m jumping straight into a master’s program now, and it promises to be very busy.

(Since several people have asked, the BS was in Cognitive Science, and the MS is for “Applied Cognition and Neuroscience” with a focus on machine learning)

There has been a lot on my mind lately, and I have sat down to write numerous times, but ultimately I haven’t finished anything. I think that my blogging mostly remained consistent when I was 1) competing and 2) had a schedule. I don’t plan to enter tournaments for much in the near future (I’ll be going to Frosty Faustings this weekend and that’s about it), but I miss writing and I think it has helped me in many ways, so we’re going to at least stick with #2.

Right now, based on my class schedule, I will strive to release one post a week on Tuesday. I’ll keep it up for a month and see how that goes, and if the drive is strong, I’ll bump it up to Tuesday and Friday like it was some time ago.

I am not sure what I will post about after this first month. Probably learning (it’s been a big focus of my education) and my own psychology, as usual. However, I do have my next three posts picked! In no order:

  • Prediction as a learning tool
  • A short primer on doing esports commentary
  • A review/revisitation of one of my favorite video games (not Smash)

Thanks for reading. I’ll see you next week!

  1. Good luck with everything, Rob. I always had fun watching you in Super Smash Bros. Melee 1 vs. 1.

To this day, you are one of a handful of individuals that reached the Grand Finals of Evolution in Super Smash Bros. Melee 1 vs. 1.

Only you, Ken, HugS, Armada, Mango, and Hungrybox have ever accomplished such a wonderful feat.

I am happy that you are busy with many projects in every facet of your life. I know that you have decided to put Super Smash Bros. Melee competitions in your past but I will certainly miss what you brought to the community.

If I am not mistaken, there are many fans of Super Smash Bros. Melee that will miss you. I always read comments about how everyone wishes that the most important events were more competitive. That is to say, the most important competitions are usually dominated by the same six individuals (Armada, Mango, Hungrybox, Mew2King, Dr. PPMD, and Leffen).

Perhaps there is something in the air now that is making everyone in Super Smash Bros. retire.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, you, Silent Wolf, Fly Amanita, Eddie, PC Chris, KDJ, and Isai are basically retired. Furthermore, Ken always says that he is limited by all of the injuries that he has accrued over the years.

In Super Smash Bros. For Wii U, ZeRo said that he is taking a break from any competition.

In Super Smash Bros. Project M, both ThundeRzReiGN and Lunchables said that they are retired.

Before 2018, I used to tell my friends that only Wobbles, Ken, ChuDat, Plup, and (maybe) HugS have a chance against the six competitors in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Now, I suppose that Super Smash Bros. Melee will continue to be dominated by the six competitors.

Of course, I am not complaining. All of you must have worked very hard to become as powerful as you are. You (and anyone else) can return and leave again whenever you want to.

If I (or anyone else in the community) are tired of seeing the same six champions, then we simply have to eliminate them ourselves.

I don't enter competitions as often as I should. I don't think that you know who I am (which is fine with me).

At the moment, I am very busy with my job, my bills, and other areas that hold my interest. Maybe we will meet one day. Until then, keep wobbling.

    Farewell, Rob.
